CHAPTER 12

So this was the grand celebration room. Well, she’d give them grand, all right. But as for the celebration part, she’d just as soon skip it. Her stomach was acting up again and no one on this damned planet understood the word

“antacid”.

Isabelle sighed. She was acting bitchy and she knew it. Poor Zeff. She had barked at him earlier, practically biting his head off in their chambers when he mentioned how lovely she looked in her formal gown. She didn’t blame him for disappearing once they reached the party. She’d ditch herself too if only that were possible.

Smiling at the absurdity of her thoughts, she looked around the room. The king and queen moved together among their people. They stopped and talked freely to everyone. Soon, they’d be up on the raised platform introducing her to hundreds of people as the new House empath. Well, that thought certainly didn’t help her stomach any.

Isabelle went in search of a place to sit and quell her raging nerves. A moment later she found a small bench and parked herself on it. Ah, now all she needed was the music’s volume to lower, the people to disappear, and a soft pillow.

“Belle.” She jumped at his voice. She hadn’t heard him approach—it was so boisterous in the room.

Isabelle looked up. “Hi, sweetheart.” She clasped his hand. “You’re being very brave.”

“Yes, I agree. And later, I hope to be richly rewarded in depraved sexual contact.” Zeff placed two capsules in her hand.

“If these are what I think they are, you will be.”

He smiled. “They will ease your stomach, the physicians assured me.”

Isabelle swallowed them right down, dry. She patted the space next to her.

“I’ve been a real bear tonight. I’m sorry for snapping at you.”

“Think no more on it, my love.” He put his arm around her and kissed her hair. “Tell me your thoughts, Belle. I wish to understand why my mate is more nervous tonight than happy.”

She exhaled loudly. “You’ll think I’m silly.”

“You are many things to me. Silly is not one of them,” Zeff assured her. “Tell me, Belle.”

“Well, you know I’m a bit of a loner.” At his nod, she continued. “I guess it’s just that this many people make me twitchy. And I don’t like a lot of attention. But tonight I’m gonna have hundreds of eyes on me. That just plain gives me the willies.”

“So you are feeling nervous and uncomfortable due to your shyness and modesty?”

“I guess. Although that kinda makes me sound like a scared little mouse.”

Her eyes burned at him. “And I’m not!”

“Of course not. You bear no resemblance to a mouse whatsoever. Not in the slightest,” he placated her. “I see no mouse here, no.”

“Humoring me?”

“Yes.”

“Thanks.”

His mouth curved. “You are welcome.”

“You know, I believe that was the very first joke I ever heard you crack.”
